The house was acquired by Gary Engbrecht in the mid 1980’s who completed a major restoration on the foundation. Then LeAnne Marie Kirkwood purchased the house from Mr. Engbrecht in the late 1980’s. Her love of Victorian houses led Ms. Kirkwood to carefully complete a massive restoration of the plumbing and the wiring, and to convert the three bedrooms upstairs to 2 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms. She also did a remodel on the back portion of the house, finishing it into a kitchen, a laundry room, a breakfast nook, and a powder room. It had been her dream to turn the house into a Bed and Breakfast, but she was never able to complete her vision.

In 2014, Alicia Elliott bought the house and proceeded to complete LeAnne’s original dream of creating a Bed and Breakfast. The land was first re-zoned to allow for such a business, then a huge revisioning of the grounds and the house took place over the following two years. In honor of her vision for the property, Leanne’s middle name Marie was chosen for the name of the new business.

With careful detail to the age and disposition of the house, Elliott procured authentic furniture and artwork from the era to furnish the house and the front porch and second floor balcony offer cozy areas to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine. The manicured gardens; resplendent with fountains, statues, and multiple seating options are the ideal place to spend time reading, conversing, or working while away from the office in a serene setting. Our remodeled modern kitchen is a hub for creativity and comfort food. Our meals are focused on locally sourced, seasonal ingredients with a home-cooked feeling! And we happily cater to a variety of dietary needs including vegan and gluten-free.

Two private cottages have been constructed, offering exquisite additional lodging options. The “Oak” cottage is ADA accessible, featuring a large and luxurious double shower. Each of the other three rooms have unique private tubs and showers. A custom made double ramp allows access to the lobby of the main house from the south courtyard. The house itself has many charming original features, including wood floors, carved banisters, stained-glass windows and surprisingly detailed artisan hardware.

Whether staying for business or pleasure, the Marie is West Olympia’s premier historic bed and breakfast. We look forward to your arrival!
